The Joyous Hori proceeds as Sri Thakurji enjoys His breakfast. It does not take Him too long to wake up, enthused as He is with the arrangements for play!

The Poet Surdas’ description of this scene shows the love of His mother, who makes sure that He is nourished before He runs off, as well as the delightful love of the Gopis, as ever bringing Him great happiness through their playful Seva. The insight thus given by the ashtachaap Poets brings joy to the hearts of the devotees with such fulfilling details. The Spring Season brings sweetness to all!

“Wake up, my Boy, the Gopis are coming over to bless You with their greetings for the Vasanta, Spring season. So be quick, have Your breakfast, otherwise You will be late for the Play! ||1||

I have made up a golden plate for You with butter and sugar candy, yoghurt and cream.” Hearing this, Sri Krishna sits up immediately: His mother Yashoda gazes at His Face. ||2||

When the two brothers have finished their breakfast, their mother gets them all dressed up and adorns Them. She gives them a packet for the traditional Holi gift [phaguva] in which she includes nuts and dried fruit and pearl necklaces. ||3||

As she does this, the Vraja Ladies arrive at the door to Nanda’s palace. They are making a lot of bustling and noise. Hearing them, Nanda’s Son becomes anxious to join them. ||4||

They smear the dusky Krishna with saffron and fragrant balm from the aloe tree and laugh and clap as they do so. They embrace Him in their arms again and again, using the excuse of demanding their Holi gifts. ||5||

He joyfully gives them all their gifts, honouring this important Holi festival. All the lovely young Ladies of Vraja bless Him profusely and, observing everything, the poet Haridas surrenders himself to this scene.” ||6||

MANGALA MEN VASANTA
‘Early morning Visions of this Spring Season’

**Pada – Rāga Vasaṁta**
Poet Krishnadas

Śrīgiridharalāla kī bānika ūpara
Āja sakhī tṛna ṭūṭerī |
Covā caṁdana agara kuṁkuma
Picakāina raṁgachūṭerī ||1||

Lālake naina ragamage dekhiyata
Aṁga anaṁgana lūṭerī |
Kṛṣṇadāsa dhani dhanya rādhikā
Adhara sudhārasa ghūṁṭerī ||2||

Today the Gopis of Vraja abandon themselves completely to the Beautiful Form of the Lad Sri Krishna, the Upholder of the Sri Girirajji Mountain. They join Him in the Holi play, soaking Him from their spray guns with water mixed with sandal paste, agar and red powder.[1]

When they see His eyes coloured with Love they surrender to this God of Love as He steals their hearts. The Poet Krishnadas declares, “Most Glorious is Sri Radhika Raniji who has gulped down the Nectar of His Lips!” [2]

Translated by Krishnaa Kinkari, transliterated by Gustav Hjerting, consultations by Pandit Ghanshyamdas.
