In this season, the Padas take the devotees deep into the mood of Holi Play:

“Sri Radha’s Lord is playing Holi! The game is between the cowherds of Nandagaon and the Fair Ladies from Varsana. They are all playing the dapha drum and the cymbals and are singing as they mix saffron and red powder together. Then they all get soaked with these colours. ||1||

The Gopis are singing sweet insults, enthused by their fresh youthfulness. “O”,they say, “Nanda’s Son is a true Enjoyer of the Divine Loving Mood! He likes to get close to us! Anyway, Holi is not the time for shyness or concealment! ||2||

Pink powder is clouding over all the ten directions. Nobody can see anything. Suddenly Chandravaliji and Lalita with other Sakhis come running. They have forcefully captured the Lad Krishna! ||3||

They steal Krishna’s peacock crown and His flower garland, flute and yellow garments. They dress Him up as a Gopi and taunt Him, calling Him Nanda’s daughter. His new beauteous Form is a vessel full of Love ||4||

The Gopis clap as they force Him to dance and call Him to their side. They say, “Have You forgotten how You stole our clothes on the Banks of Sri Yamunaji ? Now it is the Sakhis’ turn to get their own back!!” ||5||

As His Holi gift to them, He grants them His Love forever. Then He looks at them, “Please go to the Daughter of Sri Vrishabhanu ji and beg at Her Feet with your hands folded in prayer, entreating Her to let Me go!!” ||6||

Pada – Rāga Bhairava
Poet Dvarikesa

Pichavāre taiṁ chāna ūḍāvai
Horī kauṁ khilavāri |
Sāsa burī merī naṁnaṁda haṭhīlī
Kaṁtha sunaiṁ dei gāri ||1||

Gārī gāvaiṁḍhapha hi bajāvaiṁ
Dhuma macāvaiṁ dvāri |
Dvārikesa prabhu kī chabi nirakhati
Bāra-bāra balihāri ||2||

Anxious to get a chance to play Holi with Her Beloved, the Gopi goes to the back of the house and lifts up the thatched awning. “My mother in law is terrible, my sister in law is very self-opinionated and if my husband hears me he will shout me down!” ||1||

By the back door, They sing titillating songs, dance to the beats of the dapha drum and have a lot of fun. When the poet Dvarikesa witnesses this scene, he abandons himself to Them over and over again. ||2||
