  1. Srila Bhakti Pramod Puri Maharaja passed away in Jagannatha Puri last November 22. Puri Maharaja had been the oldest living disciple of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, the spiritual master of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Srila Bhakti Pramod Puri Maharaj Born in 1898 in East Bengal (now Bangladesh), in his youth he encountered the teachings of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura (Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati's father) and took up Krsna consciousness in the line of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati in 1915 and received initiation from him in 1923, receiving the name Pranavananda Brahmacari. A college graduate, Pranavananda Brahmacari worked at the Port Commission in Calcutta while living in the ashram of his spiritual master's temple on Ultadanga Junction Road. In 1925 he gave up his job to dedicate himself to his spiritual master's mission. A year later, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati made him co-editor of the Krsna conscious daily paper Nadiya Prakash. After four years he became an editor of Gaudiya magazine. Recognizing his literary talent and knowledge of scriptures, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati awarded him the title Pratna Vidyalankara ("decorated with traditional knowledge"). Pranavananda Brahmacari edited many books published by his spiritual master, including Srimad-Bhagavatam, Sri Caitanya Bhaga-vata, Sri Brahma-samhita, and Sri Caitanya-caritamrta. His service allowed him close and regular association with Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati for a number of years. Pranavananda Brahmacari was known for his diligent note-taking, and in later years wrote many articles from the notes he had taken during his spiritual master's lectures. From 1941 to 1947, Pranavananda Brahmacari spread Krsna consciousness throughout Bengal and other parts of India. In 1947 he accepted sannyasa, the renounced order of life, and received the name Bhakti Pramod Puri Goswami. In 1954 the royal family of Burdwan (Bengal) gave the temple of Ananta Vasudeva (a form of Krsna) in Kalna to Puri Maharaja, who installed his own Deities, Radha-Gopinatha, alongside Ananta Vasudeva. Puri Maharaja was well known among his godbrothers for his dedication and expertise in Deity worship and would often be called upon to install Deities in his godbrothers' temples. Puri Maharaja took seriously Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati's instruction that he never "give up the service of the pen." For most of his life he wrote, edited, and published Krsna conscious literature. His disciples have published more than a dozen of his books (written in Bengali), two of which have been translated into English. Puri Maharaja opened temples in Mayapur, Calcutta, Medinipur (Bengal), and Puri. He was given an old temple of Dauji (Lord Balarama) in Vrndavana. His institution is known as Sri Gopinath Gaudiya Math. In recent years, branches have opened in Holland, Panama, Costa Rica, and the United States. Puri Maharaja visited His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada shortly before Srila Prabhupada's passing in 1977. When Prabhupada asked Puri Maharaja to sing, he sang Jaya Radhe, Jaya Krsna, Jaya Vrndavana for Prabhupada's pleasure. Puri Maharaja greatly appreciated Srila Prabhupada service. "His preaching in the West is simply amazing," he once said. When he saw a photo of the Deities at ISKCON's Los Angeles temple, in great emotion he said, "How happy Srila Prabhupada [bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati] must be!" In 1998 the king of Orissa attended Srila Puri Maharaja's Vyasa Puja (appearance-day celebrations), commemorating Maharaja's one-hundredth birthday. India's prime minister, Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, sent a letter of praise and congratulations. Srila Puri Maharaja dedicated his life to Lord Krsna's service. He passed away in the holy land of Jagannatha Puri, surrounded by devotees chanting the holy names of the Lord. His purified body was placed in samadhi (entombed) in Sridham Бхакти Прамод Пури Госвами (в миру Прамода Бхушан Чакравартти) — основатель и руководитель (ачарья) гаудия-вайшнавской религиозной организации «Шри Гопинатх Гаудия Матх». 7. His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj appeared on this earth at Ganganandapur village, Jessore district, presently named Bangaladesh on the 18th of October, 1898 . Since his appearance he exhibited spontaneous attraction for The Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Shri Krishna. His father name was Tarini Charan Chakraborty and mother name was Ramrangini Devi. He appeared in a strict Brahmin family and started to follow the path of devotion as a young child by the influence of his neighbor Bhakti Ratna Thakur, theGodbrother of Shrila Sacchidananda Bhakti Vinode Thakur. As per the instruction of Shrila Bhakti Ratna Thakur he worshiped Shri Shri Radha Madan Mohan and was encouraged to take shelter the founder president of all Gaudiya Maths and branches around the world, His Divine Grace, Shrila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur Prabhupada. In 1915, the day after Shrila Gour-Kisore Das Babaji Maharaj's disappearance day, he went to Mayapur and met with Shrila Prabhupada. At that time Shrila Prabhupada was wearing white cloth and following strict Brahmachari life. Pramode Bhusan Chakrabory ( Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj) felt attraction to see the strict and sober nature of Shrila Prabhupada. At that time his (Shrila Prabhupada) name was Bimala Prasad Datta. After Pramode Bhusan attended the Samadhi ceremony of His Divine Grace Shrila Gaura Kishor Das Babaji Maharaja he had chance to meet with Bimala Prasad..After this meeting Pramode Bhusan decided to take shelter of Bimala Prasad as his eternal Spiritual Master.Pramode Bhusan met with Bimala Prasad again in 1917, at Yogopith temple when he accepted Mahaprabhu's prasadam from the hand of Shrimati Bhagavati Devi, mother of Bimala Prasad. Once pujari, Pramode Bhusan forgot to offer a blanket in the winter time to Shri Shri Radha Madan Mohan. That night Pramode Bhusan awoke with chills through out his body and soon realized the cause of the chills were due to his forgetfulness in the service of their Lordships Shri Shri Radha Madan Mohan. He immediately went to the house of Bhakti Ratna Thakur and explained the situation. As per the direction of Bhakti Ratna Thakur, Pramode Bhusand immediately took a cold bath in the pond nearby. After that he entered the temple for offering the blanket to Shri Shri Radha Madan Mohan. As soon as he offered the blanket the chills in his body left immediately. So, since his early teenage childhood period Shri Shri Radha Krishna, our Divine couple were receiving service by Pramode Bhusan in various ways. Shrila Prabhupada in 1918 on Gaura Purnima day after accepting the order of Sanyasa came to Kolkata to spread the message of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Radha Krishna. He would give Shrimad Bhagawatam class every day at Bhaktivinode asan. Many intellectual persons came to attend his class. In 1920 Pramode Bhusan ,after finishing his degree with honors in chemistry took an office job in Kolkata,As soon as Pramode Bhusan heard the news that Shrila Prabhupada was giving class daily he also began attending daily.Once a scorpion bit Pramode Bhusan, just before he started to attend the class of Shrila Prabhupada. Although you can imagine the pain felt by the bite of the scorpion still Pramode Bhusan went to the class without consideration. Due to Shrila Prabhupada's transcendental vision he could understand the sound faith of Pramode Bhusan for attending his class, even though he was suffering from the bite of a scorpion . On that day, Shrila Prabhupada called Pramode Bhusan after His class and invited him to stay in his Math. As per the order of Shrila Prabhupada, Pramode Bhusan started to stay in the Math just few months after that order on the day of Ramchandra's Lanka -Vijaya festival. Shrila Prabhupada also allowed Pramode Bhusan to continue working at the office while staying in the Math for supporting his family. In this way, Pramode Bhusan continued like this from 1921 to 1923 and simultaneously gave financial support to his family at Ganganandapur, Bangladesh. On the auspicious day of Shri Krishna Janmastami in 1923, Shrila Prabhupada approached Pramode Bhusan and said, today I would like to give you initiation and also from today you have to quit your office job and fully engage your time to my publication department. Pramode Bhusan hearing the order of Shrila Prabhupada became overwhelmed with joy and without reservation accepted first and second initiation along saffron dress all at the same time.He was given the name Pranabananda Das Bramhachari .After initiation Shrila Prabhupada gave a fountain pen to Pranabananda Das Bramhachari and told him to use this pen for your service from today forward. From that day Shrila Prabhupada kept Pranabananda Das Bramhachari near him at all times to dictate new articles for the purpose of publication.Due to this most important service of Pranabananda Das Bramachari we are able to read Shrila Prabhupada's articles and books. Nowadays these books are still available in Gaudiya Math at Bag-Bazar, Kolkata and Shri Chaitanya Math at Mayapur. Due to his humility, he never allowed his name to be printed inside any of these books. In 1926, he was put in charge of running Bengal's only daily Vaisnava newsletter, named Dainik Nadiya Prakash. He continued this service for three years, publishing all of his preceptor's daily discourses along with articles by fellow students and other contemporaries. At this time all books, magazines, and newsletters were all done manually. To see the sincerity and hard work of Pranabananda, Shrila Prabhupada awarded him the title Maha-Mahopadesaka and Pratna-Vidyalankar. Due to Pranabananda Das Bramachari's close relationship with Shrila Prabhupada and out of Shrila Prabhupadas affection he would sometimes make jokes with Pranabananda. Many times during prasadam Shrila Prabhupada with smiling face and eyes wide open he would say, Pranab belongs to Jessore and people of Jessore like to eat molasses so give him lots of molasses and make him happy. Also sometimes Pranabananda's mother would send distressful letters about family matters at home.Shrila Prabhupada would come to the prasadam hall and explain the contents of the letters to all the devotees, in the presence of Pranabananda .Shrila Prabhupada would say with smiling face Pranab's mother is writing such a distressful letter that after reading this even I'm feeling so much distress,so what will happen when Pranab reads the contents of this letter? In 1936, when Shrila Prabhupada was at the inauguration ceremony in Bhubaneswar Tridandi Gaudiya Math,, Pranavananda was offered by Shrila Prabhupada to accept Sanyassa initiation. Pranabananda due to his extreme humility thought himself unfit for taking the vow of Sanyassa and humbly declined the offer of Shrila Prabhupada. In December of 1936 at Bagh Bazaar Gaudiya Math in Kolkata Shrila Prabhupada due to the condition of his heart was being looked after by several intimate disciples. One morning while Pranabananda was serving Shrila Prabhupada in his room Shrila Prabhupada placed his lotus feet on the chest of his dear Pranab. With tears in his eyes Pranabananda, holding the lotus feet of Shrila Prabhupada to his chest, saidwe are all so young so what will happen to your mission if you leave us now.We need you here to guide us.Shrila Prabhupada softly repliedPranab,Krishna Krishna Krishna. On the 1rst of January, 1937 at 5:30 am just two days later His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Siddhantha Saraswati Goswami Thakur Prabhupada physically departed from this world. That day they immediately took the transcendental body of Shrila Prabhupada to Shri Mayapur Dham were Pranabananda Das Brahmachari and Shrila Bhakti Gourav Baikhanas Goswami Maharaj were both selected by all the devotees to perform the Samadhi ceremony of Shrila Prabhupada. The Samadhi Temple of Shrila Prabhupada, which was made by Kunja-Babu later known as His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Vilas Tirtha Goswami Maharaj can still be seen today at Shri Mayapur Dham. These type of intimate pastimes between Shrila Prabhupada and Panabananda were going on from 1923 until the disappearance day of Shrila Prabhupada In 1942, Shrila Prabhupada appeared to Pranabananda in a dream and imparted to him the sannyas mantra, ordering him to accept the renounced order. Five years after this transcendental dream in 1947, he took the vow of Sanyassa from His Godbrother, Shrila Bhakti Gourav Baikhanas Maharaj at Gour-Gadadhara temple,in Champahati with the help of Sat-Prasanga-Nanda Das Brahmachari who after taking Babaji initiation(from Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj) was known as Nayananandadas Babaji Maharaj. After the disappearance of Shrila Prabhupada, Pranavananda Das Brahmachari continued his service of spreading the teachings of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu through the Gaudiya Magazine, first out of the Bagh Bazar Gaudiya Math, then at Yogapith temple the birth palce of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at Mayapur .Also he was engaged as temple president of Yogopith temple for almost seven years, as per the order of his senior Godbrother, Kunja-Babu. After continuing seven years of service to Yogapith temple he relocated to Kalna, a Holy place where Gouridas Pandit and Suryadas Pandit, intimate associates of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu manifested their pastimes with Hriday-Chaitanya Prabhu at bank of the Ganga river. Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj remembering all these pastimes stayed their on the bank of the river Ganga at Kalna in a small kutir worshiping his home Deity for the next three years. After that the King of Burdwan was extremely impressed by his saintly character and in 1958 the king offered Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj a three hundred year old Temple of Shri Ananta Vasudeva at Kalna. In the same year,on the appearance day of Shrimati Radha Rani, Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj entered the temple to stay and serve the deities. After three years passed Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj felt separation from the service of publishing the message of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu given by Shrila Prabhupada. After a short time, Shrila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj approached Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj to take the service of the Chaitanya Vani Magazine editorial department as well as taking care of his publication department for the service of Shrila Gurudeva and Mahaprabhu..Finally Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj left the temple of Shri Anatna Vasudeva and gave the responsibilities for taking care of the temple to one of his intimate associates named Nani Gopal Prabhu. In this way from 1961 to 1989 he undertook these various services in the department of Shrila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj and also traveled to different temples of his Godbrothers for helping their publication department as well. Once a Godbrother of Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj, Pujjyapad Shri Madan Mohan Das adhikari took all of his family members to accept initiation from Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaja.Starting in 1981 Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaja began accepting all the family members and gradually gave them initiation one by one.One of those family members was the grandson of Madan Mohan Dasadhikari Shrila Bhakti Bibudha Bodhayana Maharaja, now the present Acharya and successor of His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj. It is a well known fact that Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj was the foremost expert in regaurds to Diety installation,Samadhi ceremony, and Temple foundation installation.Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj upon the request from his dear God brothers actually installed almost all of the deities within the Gaudiya Math and also performed the Samadhi ceremony of most of his God brothers including His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Rakshaka Shridhar Dev Goswami Maharaj, and His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj. It should be noted that His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada also requested His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj to lay the corner stone foundation at Shri Mayapur Chandradaya Mandir. In this way we can see the magnanimous mood of Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj to engage in these services to all his God brothers without any reservation. 1n 1987, at the age of 89, Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj at the request of the family members of Pujjyapada Shri Madan Mohan Dasadhikari accepted a small piece of land in Ishodyan, Sree-Mayapur Dham . Amongst the family members Shripad Gopinath Das Brahmachari, Vimal Krishna Dasadhikari, Madhusudan Dasadhikari were so much eager to make one bhajan Kuthir for their Gurudeva, His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj. After making one small bhajan kutir gradually lots of devotees started approaching Shrila Puri Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj for his shelter, siksha, and blessings. Finally he decide to install his ultimate Prayojana-Tattva deities, Shri Shri Gour-Gadhara, Shri Shri Radha-Gopinatha and Shri Jagannath Dev.. A few years later, Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj ordered his disciple Shripad Ramdas Prabhu just after the time of initiation to bring a Lakshmi Nrisimha Deva Deity to His Mayapur temple. In the following years, he established other temples in Jagannath Puri Dham, Vrindavan Dham, Kolkata and Midnapore. Shrila Bhakti Promode Puri Maharaja had outstanding love for his godbrothers and was inspired in his glorification to other Vaishnavas. He found richness in everyone he met. He had the quality of making one feel so much wanted and their life so much valued. At the same time, he paid the least attention to himself. He was an emblem of humility and simplicity, and his generosity of spirit and kindness touched the hearts of the whole Vaishnava community.Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaja set the example throughout his life how one can manifest the actual mood of how to be more humble than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree, and to be always ready to offer all respects to others irregardless of their backround. We are greatly indebted to His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj for his lifetime of pure devotion, spanning over a century, which we can aspire for, learn from, and discuss about for our own spiritual nourishment. His Divine Grace Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaja departed this world for the eternal abode in the predawn hours of Narayana Chaturdasi, October 21, 1999, one day before Rasa Purnima. His divine body was transported from Jagannatha Puri to the Gopinatha Gaudiya Matha in Ishodyan Shri Dham Mayapur and there he was placed in his eternal samadhi Mandir. Prior to his departure from this world, Shrila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaja appointed his intimate disciple, Shripada Bhakti Bibudha Bodhayan Maharaja as his successor to Shri Gopinatha Gaudiya Matha for the purpose of carrying on his instruction to spread the message of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu around the world. In years to come as more of his words and visions are translated, the world outside of Bengal and India will come to know the spirit of the true Vaishnava religion that he tirelessly made available through his editing and publishing service. May the gentle rain of nectar of his perfect teachings continue to bring auspiciousness into this world.
  8. By Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja [september 28, 2014 (In India) is the divine appearance day of Parama-pujyapada Srila Bhakti Pramoda Puri Gosvami Maharaja. In 2001, Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja dictated this presentation in Hindi, and it was translated by Sripad Madhava-priya brahmacari.] PuriMahAll glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga The following is a holy heartfelt offering (puspanjali) at the lotus feet of Parampujyapada astottara-sata Sri Srimad Bhakti Pramoda Puri Gosvami Maharaja in his divine remembrance: In November of 1946, I left my home and came to Sri Devananda Gaudiya Matha in Sri Dhama Navadvipa. After a short time, in 1947, at the end of Sri Navadvipa Dhama Parikrama, which was held on the occasion of the divine appearance of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, I took shelter at the lotus feet of my most beloved om visnupada astottara-sata Sri Srimad Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja. He made my life successful by initiating me with harinama and diksa initiations. After celebrating the holy festival of Gaura Purnima and Sri Dhama Parikrama, I accompanied Gurudeva to one of the branches of Sri Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti, namely Sri Uddharana Gaudiya Matha in Chinchurah. It was there, at Sri Uddharana Gaudiya Matha, that I had the audience of Parampujyapada astottara-sata Sri Srimad Bhakti Pramoda Puri Gosvami's lotus feet for the first time. He had already accepted the renounced order on March 3, 1947 at Sri Gaura-Gadadhara Matha in Campahatti, from nitya-lila pravista om visnupada astottara-sata Srila Bhakti Gaurava Vaikhanas Maharaja, one of the prominent sannyasa disciples of jagad-guru Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada. I was very impressed by my meeting with him, and my most beloved Gurudeva, Sri Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja, engaged me in his service. Every day I used to go with him to take bath in the Ganges nearby, carrying his outer garment, kaupin and kamandalu (water pot). After bathing, I carried his wet clothes and kamandalu, now filled with water, back to our Matha, and then I fed him prasadam. Moreover, I obeyed the many instructions he used to kindly give me on various occasions. I submissively put so many questions before him, and he used to reply to all my inquiries with great affection. During our discussions in those days, he used to tell me some things about his life history. His name was previously Pramoda Bhusana. His parents were religious and from the brahmana (Cakravarti) caste. He took birth on October 8, 1898 in the village of Gangananda Pura in the district of Jessore, in the present-day Bangladesa. From his very childhood he was fond of hari-kirtana, chanting the Lord's holy names. He felt so much pleasure in hearing hari-kirtana that sometimes he would become forgetful of his bodily condition. During his student life, he met a Gaudiya Vaisnava named Sri Bhaktiratnakara Thakura. Sri Bhaktiratnakara Thakura was the first person to introduce him to the books of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura. After receiving the books he studied them thoroughly, and then he began to read Sri Caitanya-caritamrta in the association of that Vaisnava. After completing his B.Sc. degree at Calcutta University, he wanted to continue his education, but the burden of maintaining his family fell on his shoulders. He unwillingly left his studies and accepted employment at the Post Commission in Calcutta. It was during that period that he met jagad-guru nitya-lila pravista om visnupada Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada and was deeply influenced by hearing his powerful hari-katha. In 1923, on the auspicious occasion of Sri Krsna Janmastami, he received diksa from Srila Prabhupada at Ultadanga Gaudiya Matha and was given the name Sri Pranavananda Brahmacari. Srila Prabhupada Sarasvati Thakura was immensely satisfied by his steadiness, full surrender, loving service endowed with bhava, and especially his art of writing. Therefore, he gave him the responsibility of managing sankirtana, preaching, hari-katha, publishing the Dainika Nadia Prakasa, and writing articles for Sri Gaudiya Matha's journals. For the service of the brhad-mrdanga (book publication), Srila Puri Maharaja stayed in various places like Calcutta, Krsna Nagar, and Mayapura. For the sake of preaching gaura-vani, the message of Gaurasundara, he traveled not only throughout Bengal, but also to many places throughout India, and he met with great success. He sometimes traveled with his Gurudeva, Srila Prabhupada, and sometimes with the senior intimate sannyasa disciples of Srila Prabhupada. In this way he served his Gurudeva by internal, mano'bhista seva, fulfilling his innermost cherished desires. After the disappearance of Srila Prabhupada, Srila Bhakti Pramoda Puri Gosvami Maharaja stayed for a few months with my beloved Gurupadapadma Sri Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja, Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Gosvami Maharaja, Srila Bhakti Raksaka Sridhara Gosvami Maharaja, and other god-brothers. I had a wonderful opportunity to serve him and hear his hari-katha during that period. He had so much affection for me that he used to consider me his disciple, and I used to respect him as I respected my Gurudeva. On numerous occasions he blessed me with abundant kindness. Once, when we were at Chinchurah Matha, we went together for bathing in the Ganga. I was carrying his cloth and water-pot, and also my own lota (cup) that I still had from my previous home life. I put them down on the ghata and we both entered the water of Bhagavati Bhagirathi for bathing. After bathing I found that my lota was gone. It had been carried away by the waves of the Ganga, which was very near the ocean at that place. Pujyacarana Puri Maharaja smiled and said, "You left your home, family, wife, son and wealth to become a renounced Vaisnava, so what need is there to be attached to a lota?" I was also smiling. Taking his wet clothes and water-pot, we returned to the matha. As long as he was present, every time we met he used to remind me of this pastime, and I also cannot forget the mercy he showed to me throughout my life. After a long time, Prapujya-carana Srila Puri Gosvami Maharaja was given the responsibility of serving the Deity of Sri Ananta Vasudeva of Kalna. The King of Vardhman was unable to serve this Deity. When he observed the pure disposition and devotion of Srila Puri Gosvami Maharaja, he was immensely impressed and offered the service of Ananta Vasudeva to him. Later, Srila Puri Maharaja took charge of the temple along with his disciples. I also went to have his audience there many times at Kalna. I always saw him busy in writing. His pen never stopped. He used to spend every moment in writing articles about pure bhakti, whenever a chance came after completing his fixed number of rounds of harinama, serving the Deity, and studying the sastras. He also used to submit many articles to the journals of different Gaudiya Mathas. Especially, he was the editor-in-chief of "Sri Caitanya Vani", the journal of Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Gosvami Maharaja's Matha. sppgm and gurudevaIn the last years of his life, he stayed in Sridhama Mayapura, where he established Sri Gopinatha Gaudiya Matha at Isodyana. In the last stage of his life he stayed at Bankim Muhana Cakratirtha in Sri Purusottama Dhama. Finally, he entered into nitya-lila on November 22, 1999, at 2.07 am. Whenever I used to go to Sridhama Vrndavana, Sridhama Mayapura, or Calcutta, I had the good fortune to have the audience of his lotus feet. At that time I used to present to him whatever new publications we had produced from our Matha in the Hindi language, such as Jaiva Dharma, Caitanya Siksamrta, the Teachings of Sriman Mahaprabhu, Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura's Bindu, Kirana and Kana, Upadesamrta, Manah Siksa, Raga Vartma Candrika and also some English publications. He was delighted to receive all these books from me, and in return he inspired and instructed me to publish more books of the Gaudiya Vaisnava philosophy. Whenever we would meet he would ask, "What new publications are coming in Hindi?" He was present to pacify us at the time our beloved Gurudeva entered into nitya-lila and also when the Samadhi Mandira was established at Sri Devananda Gaudiya Matha. During his visit, he told us with a melting heart, "Vinoda Da (Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja) was very affectionate to us. Whenever we knew that Vinoda Da was not in Mayapura, we would also cancel our scheduled program to visit Mayapura." He said that there was no one as warmly affectionate as Vinoda Da. In this way, Srila Puri Gosvami Maharaja was fully surrendered and one of the internal associates of Srila Prabhupada. At the time of performing kirtana and giving lectures he would close his eyes, which were brimming with tears, being incessantly immersed in the bhava of bhakti. He would express such deep realizations while discussing bhakti-tattva and rasa-tattva that his whole audience would be enchanted. He was the embodiment of Sriman Mahaprabhu's verse, "trnad api sunicena" (more humble than a blade of grass). He was a topmost self-realized devotee and always deeply appreciative of others' merit. Until this very day, I never saw him criticize anyone, and he even used to give inspiration and respect to this insignificant person who is thoroughly bereft of bhakti. I often saw him walking with his danda, traveling barefoot in Navadvipa Dhama and eighty-four krosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama. Even in his advanced age, I saw him doing parikrama, without eating and drinking, and always singing kirtanas and speaking hari-katha. I went to see him almost one month and fifteen days prior to his divine disappearance. At that time he was not speaking at all and he kept his eyes closed. I caught hold of his lotus feet and said, "I am your most insignificant servant, Narayana Maharaja." Upon hearing this, he caught both of my hands in his and gave me his blessings. Then he ordered his servants to give me prasadam. I do not know if he spoke to anyone else again after that moment. He entered into nitya-lila at the age of 101 years. He was expert in all siddhanta and a pure devotee in the line of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada, and I felt so much inspiration from his blessings and instructions. Now, after his entrance into the divine transcendental pastimes of the Lord, I am bereft of the touch of that hand which used to confer upon me profuse blessings and inspiration, and thus I feel a profound sadness in his absence. In this way I am offering sri sri puspanjali at the lotus feet of such a parama-niskincana (topmost renunciate) mahabhagavata (most superior devotee), Sri Sri Bhakti Pramoda Puri Gosvami Maharaja. May he be pleased to shower his causeless mercy upon me. Vaisnava krpalesaprarthi, Tridandisvami Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja
